This was my first project taking on polystyrene foam ….. I was really interested to give it a go to see how it compares with carving wood, and it definitely has its ups and downs! I was approached by Jonathan from Bespoke Eyewear in Harrogate to recreate a glasses holder in a much larger scale to create an eye catching window display.
One much appreciated benefit of working with expanded polystyrene was its ease for transportation, it makes a nice change to moving heavy logs around. The mess however, is pretty unwelcome as anyone will know who has ever split a bean bag the little balls get everywhere!
I decided to use a mixture of tools, mainly the chainsaw for blocking out but rather than power tools I used kitchen knives to do most of the smoothing and shaping. The grade of polystyrene used was not particularly dense so sanding was a bit troublesome.
